Newest Compositions
Concerto 4-3, a 30-minute work for string trio (soli of two violins and double bass) and orchestra, was completed in 2007. It was premiered by Time for Three and The Philadelphia Orchestra on January 10, 2008 at Verizon Hall in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The work was co-commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Wheeling Symphony.
The Singing Rooms, a 30-minute work for solo violin, SATB chorus, and orchestra, was completed in 2007. Higdon used the poetry of Jeanne Minahan as the text for the work. It was premiered by Jennifer Koh, soloist, and The Philadelphia Orchestra on January 17, 2008, in Philadelphia. The work was co-commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra.
Soprano Sax Concerto, a 17-minute work for soprano saxophone solo and orchestra, was completed in 2007. It was premiered August 3, 2007 by Tim McAllister, soprano saxophone soloist, with the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music Orchestra (Marin Alsop, cond.) at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, in Santa Cruz, California.
Spirit, a 5-minute work for orchestral brass and percussion, was completed in 2006. It was commissioned by the Virginia Art Festival for the Jamestown 2007 - 400th Anniversary Celebration. It was premiered May 11, 2007 by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (JoAnn Falletta, cond.) at the Virginia Arts Festival.
Light, a 4-minute work for orchestra, was completed in 2006. It was commissioned by The Green Bay Symphony Orchestra and was premiered by that ensemble on April 28, 2007 at the Weidner Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Kelly's Field, a 6-7-minute work for concert band, was completed in 2006. It was commissioned by the Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic and was written in honor of Prof. Mark S. Kelly, director of bands emeritus at Bowling Green State University. (Mr. Kelly was Ms. Higdon's symphonic band director during her undergraduate studies at BGSU.)
String Poetic, an 18-minute work for violin and piano, was completed in 2006. It was commissioned for violinist Jennifer Koh by San Francisco Performances, San Francisco, CA; The Carlsen Center, John County Community College, Overland Park, KS; 92nd Street Y, New York, NY; Oberlin College Conservatory, Oberlin, OH; and The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia, PA.
Percussion Concerto, a 25-minute work for percussion soloist and orchestra, was completed in 2005. It was co-commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Each orchestra premiered the work in their respective concert halls during the 2005-06 season. Colin Currie was the soloist in each performance.
